History

BlackRock was established in 1988 by eight partners who aimed to prioritize clients’ needs and interests. They focused on asset management with a strong emphasis on risk management, a principle that continues to guide the firm to this day.

The following year in 1999, BlackRock began offering its proprietary technology, Aladdin, to the broader industry, enhancing transparency and innovation in risk management. The same year, on October 1st, BlackRock went public on the New York Stock Exchange at $14 per share, managing $165 billion in assets by year’s end.

The firm founded BlackRock Solutions in 2000, leveraging Aladdin as the foundation, marking its entry as a technology provider in the financial sector.

During the 2008 financial crisis, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York enlisted BlackRock to assess Bear Stearns’ mortgage-backed securities, highlighting the firm’s expertise in navigating complex financial challenges.

BlackRock Performance

As recently as 2024, BlackRock’s AUM increased by $2.4 trillion due to $456 billion in inflows and a sharp increase in the value of its existing assets. In the third quarter, revenues surged 15% year-over-year.

BlackRock has significantly bolstered its presence in private markets through notable acquisitions. In January 2024, the firm agreed to acquire Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) for $12.5 billion, positioning BlackRock as a global leader in infrastructure investments.

Additionally, in December 2024, BlackRock announced the acquisition of HPS Investment Partners, a private credit firm, for $12 billion, further diversifying its alternative investment offerings.
